Mitikas is a quiet, flat and seaside village, that connects the mainland of Etoloakarnania with the Ionian Sea. Visitors that choose Mitikas for holidays or short breaks can enjoy a beach of 4 kilometers, starting inside the village and next to the harbour up to the area of “Lissimos”. For those who want to use their car, very many other beaches and small bays wait of them either in the side of Agrilias (10 km from Mitikas to the South East) or in the side of Elia (3 km far from Mitikas to the West). They can aslo visit and the therapeutic mud baths of Mitikas (unfortunately not organised). The islands of Kalamos and Kastos are waiting of you for swimming in their impressive blue and green waters. In Kalamos, the pine trees of the North and East beaches will offer you their shadow for sun protection. And for all of those who like water sports the area is ideal (but they must have their personal equipment since there is not something organised in Mitikas at the moment). Wind surf, sailing (during 2011, 4800 sailing boats visited the area), canoe, ski, fishing, diving. And for the smaller visitors N.O.M.A. (Nautical Association of Mitikas – noma2013.blogspot.gr) offers swimming lessons and several other activities during summer (at no cost).
For the friends of hiking and trekking (but also for those who walk for health reasons) Mitikas and the surround area, offer ideal routes for every level of difficulty. A flat village but with mountains around, so you can combine the walking either with a visit to the Temple of Poseidon, in the Churches of Agia Triada and Agia Sofia, or (for “professional” hikers) with visit at the old Cave-Church of Agia Eleousa (23rd of August the local celebration at Mitikas), at the old Church of Agia Paraskevi (26th of July the local celebration at Kandila), at the Church of Agios Nikolaos, at Paliohori, Kastri, Pirgos and Glosses (so as to combine your visit with the history of ancient Alyzia), at the old village of Varnakas, and at very many other places. Most of the above routes can be done and with bicycles. But the most beautiful of all the routes is the one that connects Kalamos and Episkopi, through the road with the pine trees.
For those who own a boat, Mitikas is the ideal place to discover the around islands, beaches and bays. Islands of Kalamos, Kastos, Meganisi, Lefkada, Kithros, Formikula, Atokos, Arkoudi, Ithaca, Kefallonia, as well as Echinades islands. Choosing Mitikas as a basis, you can use your car for some daily or a few hours visits and meet the history or the unique nature and the civilization of Etoloakarnania. Oak forest of Xiromero, Holy City of Mesolonghi with the Garden of the Heroes, the saltpans, the lagoon and the therapeutic mud baths, the biggest lake of Greece – Trichonida lake – next to Agrinio, Castles of Vonitsa – Santa Maura – Aktion, Plagia, Castle of Nafpaktos, Engraving Museum of Vaso Katraki at Aitoliko (a wonderful city that very few realise that is an island into a lagoon), Ancient Kechropoula (the Kingdom of Odysseus?) at Palairos, the Ancient Theatre of Oiniades at Katochi (with a marvelous festival during summer), Fraxos (flowering ash) forest close to Neochori, natural water sources of Korpi at Monastiraki, but also the Akarnanian mountains with the plateaus of Dergovitsa and Asani the closest for a visit. And at each one place you will visit, you will meet more beauties but mainly pure and original people. This is the Secret Greece.
If you want to visit some neighboring regions you can see places like the island of Lefkada and its famous beaches and waterfalls, Preveza and the ancient Nikopolis (ask to learn the great history of this city), Igoumenitsa and the Nekromanteion of Acheron devoted to Hades and Persephone, Parga and its Castle, Ioannina with the great history and our favourite Museum of Vrellis (www.vrellis.gr).
But if the main reason of your visit is relaxing, then you are in the right place. The right place to leave behnd all your thoughts.
We wait you at Mitikas to host you with respect and friendship. And when we drink the last ouzo in the seaside taverns of the village, when we eat and the last meze in the taverns of the area, and when we eat the last home made sweet, we are sure you would like to stay a bit more and to come again and again. Because the friends you would do will be very many.
